Kim: Day 11

SA2SOS Jul 31, 2015

Yesterday we left the metropolitan area and headed south, with several interesting stops along the way, and landed in Alamogordo for the night.

We made a quick stop in San Antonio, NM so that Stacy could aquire a trinket as a memory of being there...

The road then brought us to the Trinity Site - where it all began - they tested the first Fat Boy nuclear bomb here, right before using it to end WWII.

The road south continued to bring us sites to stop at - next stop Valley of Fires - a large volcanic lava flow in the middle of New Mexico - raw beauty.

Next we visited Three Rivers Petroglyph Site and got up close and personal with some petrogyphs, and even beat out the incoming storm.

The road finally brought us to Alamogordo, NM where we found several fun things to do. THe first was a tour of a pistachio farm and winery, which is the home to the world's largest pistachio.

The Alameda Park Zoo was our next stop, at Abby's request. It was a shady, quaint little zoo and a perfect way to relax in the afternoon.

The evening brought us to White Sands National Monument for a Full Moon Hike on the white gypsum sand dunes - quiet, simple natural landscapes, and oh so beautiful. The moon didn't fully cooperate, well the clouds were actually the issue. The same clouds that helped give us a stunning sunset, also helped to shadow the full moon until right before we were leaving from the hike, and it only popped out for a few minutes.
